Hidden Sugars

The Hidden Sugars Hiding in Your Summer Favorites. Don't fall the the Hype!

The Hidden Sugars Hiding in Your Summer Favorites. Don't fall the the Hype!

You are standing at the farmer's market on a beautiful July morning, feeling proud of yourself. You picked up fresh berries, grass-fed beef, and some vegetables for the week. Then you grab a "natural" lemonade, a frozen yogurt bar, and some salsa for dinner. You feel great about your choices.

But here is what I need to tell you: that lemonade, frozen treat, and condiment likely contain more sugar than you realize. And if you are trying to reduce inflammation, release weight, or just feel better, those hidden sugars are working against you every single day.

I know this is frustrating. Summer should be fun and easy, not stressful. But once you know what to look for, label reading becomes simple. And when you can spot the sneaky sugar, you get your power back.

Why Summer Foods Hide So Much Sugar

Summer is the season when our guard goes down. The weather is warm, we are outside more, and we reach for things that feel refreshing and light. Drinks, frozen treats, and condiments feel like small choices—not the big meals we worry about.

Food manufacturers know this. They load summer favorites with sugar because it tastes good, keeps products shelf-stable, and makes us want more. The tricky part? They hide it behind words like "natural," "organic," "no added sugar," and "all-natural sweetener." These labels sound healthy. But the sugar is still there, still affecting your body the same way.

The Summer Drinks Trap

Let's start with drinks because this is where most people are shocked. That bottle of "natural" lemonade at the farmer's market? It likely has 25 to 35 grams of sugar per serving. That is the same as eating seven teaspoons of sugar in one drink. A typical frozen coffee drink? Easily 40 to 50 grams. Even the "unsweetened" versions often have 15 to 20 grams hiding in there.

Here is what most people miss: the label says "serving size," but you drink the whole bottle. So multiply what you see by however many servings are in that bottle. That "healthy" drink just became a sugar bomb.

The fix is simpler than you think. Water with fresh lemon or lime. Herbal iced tea with a splash of cream. Sparkling water. These are refreshing, delicious, and have zero hidden sugar. Start with one drink swap and build from there.

Frozen Treats and the "Healthy" Illusion

Frozen yogurt feels lighter than ice cream, right? So it must be better for you. Not necessarily. Many frozen yogurt brands have 20 to 30 grams of sugar in a small serving. Add toppings—granola, honey, candy—and you are looking at 50 to 60 grams. A regular popsicle that looks innocent? Often 15 to 20 grams in one bar.

The fruit-based frozen treats are even trickier. That "all-natural" fruit sorbet or smoothie pop sounds healthy because it has fruit. But fruit is still sugar, and when it is concentrated in a frozen treat, your body processes it the same way it processes candy.

I am not saying never have a frozen treat. I am saying know what you are eating. A full-fat ice cream with real ingredients might actually be a better choice than a low-fat frozen yogurt loaded with sugar and additives. Your body will thank you for the real fat and simple ingredients.

Condiments and Hidden Sugar Everywhere

This is where people really get blindsided. Salsa, ketchup, barbecue sauce, marinades, salad dressings—these are the sneaky culprits. One tablespoon of ketchup has about 4 grams of sugar. One tablespoon of barbecue sauce has 7 grams. You use two tablespoons, and you have already consumed 14 grams of sugar without realizing it.

Salad dressing is a big one. You made a beautiful salad with fresh greens and vegetables. Then you pour on two tablespoons of store-bought dressing, and you just added 8 to 12 grams of sugar. You thought you were being healthy.

The solution? Make your own condiments. Salsa is just tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and lime juice. Salad dressing is oil, vinegar, and seasoning. Marinades are oil, acid, and herbs. These take five minutes to make and have zero hidden sugar.

How to Read Labels Like a Pro

This is the skill that changes everything. Look at the nutrition label. Find "Total Carbohydrate" and then look at "Sugars." That number tells you how many grams of sugar are in one serving. Here is your benchmark: if it has more than 5 grams of sugar per serving, question whether it is worth it.

Then read the ingredient list. Sugar has many names: cane juice, evaporated cane juice, honey, agave, maple syrup, coconut sugar. These all spike your blood sugar the same way regular sugar does. If sugar (in any form) is in the first three ingredients, that product is a sugar delivery system. Put it back.

Start with one category—maybe drinks. Learn to spot the sugar in drinks. Then move to condiments. Then frozen treats. You do not need to overhaul everything at once. One habit change at a time.

A Note About the "Sugar is Essential" Argument

I recently heard a podcaster claim that we are giving sugar a "bad rap" because "every cell of our body needs glucose to survive." I question that premise.

Here is the truth: many cells in your body can use fats or proteins for fuel instead of glucose. In fact, this is exactly how your body achieves weight release. When you remove excess sugar, your body becomes metabolically flexible and efficiently burns fat for energy.

The podcaster might have been speaking only to people who do not need to release weight, but I will venture to guess that everyone ingests glucose in some form daily. Natural sugars are already in so many whole foods—fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. If you feel you need more glucose, your choices should come from fruit and other forms of complex carbs, not from processed foods hiding sugar under innocent-sounding labels.

You do not need to fear glucose, but you also do not need to actively seek out hidden sugars in processed products. Your body will get what it needs from real food.

Why This Matters for Your Health

When you eat sugar, your blood sugar spikes. Your pancreas releases insulin to bring it back down. Your body stores the excess as fat. This cycle happens over and over throughout the day if you are eating hidden sugars. Over time, this creates inflammation, weight gain, hormone imbalance, and energy crashes.

Remove the hidden sugar, and your body starts to heal. Your energy stabilizes. Your cravings decrease. Inflammation goes down. Weight releases naturally. You feel better. It is not complicated, but it is powerful.

Start Small This Summer

You do not need to be perfect. You need to be aware. Pick one summer favorite that you eat or drink regularly. Look at the label. See the sugar. Then make one swap. That is it. One change. Build from there.

Are you searching for safer ways, but not sure how to start?

Hello!

I used to struggle with how to figure out what natural wellness and alternative therapies even were. How do you find them? How do you know what’s safe? How do you use them the right way? And how do you defend your choices in a world that’s so quick to grab a pill for everything?

I also didn’t understand the full extent of how my environment affects my family and me. The products in my home. The air we breathe. The little “everyday” exposures that add up over time. It was overwhelming. And honestly, a little frightening.

Then I discovered a community that had been there for years, but I never knew even existed. And it changed everything. People with a shared passion for nature’s original wellness plan. A place filled with professionals. Backed by science. Full of help, care, and real-life experience.

Now I help people who were just where I was in 2014. People who are yearning to learn more. And who want to feel confident that there are other ways to support health and wellness.

If that’s you, get in touch—I’d love to help!
